History of Jazzway 6004

“There is NOTHING like Jazzway ANYWHERE on the east coast and probably in the US” It’s an experience, not just a venue"  - saxophonist and educator, Tim Warfield

Jazzway 6004 is a creative arts 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that promotes straight ahead jazz and blues in respectful and an intimate listening environment.  We help build jazz audiences for the best in local and touring Jazz in Baltimore.  Jazzway 6004 developed out of a need for more jazz venues in Baltimore to showcase the tremendous wealth of jazz talent in our area.

JAZZWAY 6004 is the home of local jazz/blues vocalist Marianne Matheny-Katz and her husband, Howard Katz, as well as a hospitable and intimate listening room venue for house concerts in Baltimore. This elegant mid-century modern party-house was built in 1966 by a well-known Baltimore bookie who hosted lavish, high-profile soirees.  Local legend has it that both Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra were guests here.  Marianne and Howard refurbished the home, created a listening room on the ground floor and have opened it to the public for the past 10 years.  This warm, comfortable and welcoming space is the ideal setting to experience live music and then mingle with the artists afterwards with a cup of coffee, glass of wine and homemade desserts.

We hold 6 to 8 concerts per year from September through December and from March through June.  We do not hold concerts in January and February or in July and August. The performance space seats about 65 people, and the room has a complete sound system and a 6-ft Baldwin Grand piano.  We have a sound and recording engineer at each concert  and all concerts are recorded.  Concerts are held on Saturdays, but occasionally there may be a Sunday afternoon event to accommodate a special touring artist.  ALL TICKETS include coffee and soft drinks, an elegant dessert, cheese and fruit buffet and entry into a merchandise raffle plus a chance to mingle with the artists. We obtain a one-day liquor license for each concert and patrons may purchase beer, wine and cocktails at very reasonable prices from the bar.

We list our events on public music and event calendars, such as the Baltimore Jazz Alliance www.baltimorejazz.com, DC Jazz www.dcjazz.com , The Baltimore Sun online edition http://www.baltimoresun.com/events/   (put Jazzway into search) , the AllAboutJazz email service “Jazz Near You” and through WEAA and WYPR radio.

Please donate to Jazzway 6004

Our concerts have high overhead costs.  We incur the same amount in music licensing fees and insurance that larger commercial venues incur, but we wish to sustain a high payout to musicians along with hospitality amenities they often don't get elsewhere.  In order to continue to bring you these wonderful concerts without decreasing the benefits to the musicians, please consider making a tax deductible donation to Jazzway.  Any donation, large or small will be much appreciated and will help us to retain our high standards.

Thanks! Howard & Marianne
